Glossary

Journey, shamanic journey
”Excursion” of the shaman when he/she goes from ordinary reality (OR) to non-ordinary reality (NOR) with clear intention and power and afterwards returns to OR.

Shamanic State of Consciousness (SSC)
An altered state of consciousness usually achieved by sonic driving by drums or rattles; in peculiar shamanic cultures also by the aid of psychedelic drugs. In SSC the shaman is able to "see" things in NOR normally hidden to ordinary people, e.g. spirits.

Non-ordinary Reality (NOR)
Often called "Hidden Universe" or "Second Reality" or "Other Reality"; sometimes paralleled with "The Beyond": The realm of spirits. The space of mystical experiences. Accesible normally only in Altered States of Consciousness (ASC); the SSC is one of it.

Spirits
Entities of NOR. A spirit could be considered to be an animate essence that has intelligence and different degrees of power.

Shamanic Tools
Tools for changing consciousness like drum or rattles. In some cultures quartz crystals, quills, feathers, sacred stones, figurines ("eeren" in Tuvinian; "ongon" among other Siberian peoples) etc. are regarded as powerful helpers of the shaman as well as other instruments used for sonic driving like Didjeridoo or the Singing Bow. In our societies tapes, CD, books and literature on the suject also are regarded as tools for shamanic work.
